Project Description

The scarlet ibis

The scarlet ibis is found in the coastal areas of northern South America. In the wetlands, mangrove forests, along lagoons and rivers that have tides. In the mangrove area they nest in colonies.

The fact that their main food, such as crabs, crustaceans and shrimps, contains carotene, gives the birds their red color.

Until recently, these beautiful birds were often hunted because they were considered a delicacy. Fortunately, the scarlet ibis is now a protected bird.
