Did you know that there are 340 species of turtles? They are threatened because their natural habitat is being destroyed by human activities such as deforestation and mining. Turtles are also commonly eaten and some species end up in the pet trade.
Turtles are found all over the world in many different habitats, such as forests, grasslands, swamps and in the sea. All turtles lay eggs.
Turtles grow quickly when young but develop very slowly. Larger tortoises only reach maturity after several decades, but such species can also become very old. Their menu includes both animal and vegetable matter, depending on the species.
